NUCLEAR IRAN, IAEA CONCERNED FOR URANIUM ENRICHMENT
VIENNA, 1 September - In a new report reserved
the UN agency for nuclear safety
expressed concern over the announced intention of Iran to resume large-scale
the process for '
uranium enrichment, with purpose 'military potential.
But the document, released today in Vienna for the meeting of IAEA Board of Governors
of 13 September and '
been welcomed by Tehran as
also contains positive elements for the Islamic Republic.
The sixth report on Iran's nuclear work
the last two months is concerned
Iran plans to proceed with the processing of 37 tons of''yellowcake''
, as it is called the raw material at low
content radioactivity 'from which is extracted
uranium hexafluoride, which then you get highly enriched uranium
necessary for the production of electrical energy
as well as to build nuclear bombs. According
American experts, the quantity 'can be shown
build five nuclear bombs.
At the same time, the IAEA, empowered by the community '
International seeks to understand what the Iranian nuclear program
(the bomb as claimed by Washington and other Western States
, the production of electricity as Tehran says
) has acknowledged
that the Iranians might be plausible''explanation''in the past about the
traces of highly enriched uranium found by inspectors at international
some centrifuges, and that means' this is
traces of radioactivity 'already present' before buying
from the Iranian side. In the report released tonight in Vienna, which
ANSA has read, it says explicitly that the
contamination from highly enriched uranium found by inspectors at two sites
Iranians may have occurred before
purchase of components for centrifuges,
support as the Iranians.
Not surprisingly, the positive assessment given this evening by
Foreign Ministry in Tehran, according to which the relationship
and 'a positive step towards clarifying the situation
Iranian and confirmation of the peaceful nature of its
activities' nuclear.
An alarm bell has, however, 'it rang
the intention announced by Tehran to resume large-scale production of equipment related to uranium enrichment
(taking place in centrifuges in series), putting an end to
promise made at the end of 2003, driven
of international concerns, to terminate temporarily
T his type of production.
The new IAEA report and 'was greeted with''great concern''
Deputy Secretary of State, John Bolton
. Teheran''and 'a threat to global peace,''he said in a statement
.
The document will be 'examined 35 hours by members of the Board of Governors of the IAEA
(Italy, too, is part of it) in view of
meetings starting September 13,
expected for three days. Meanwhile, a new report by IAEA and '
was announced today for November 2004. (ANSA)
